Message from the President

of the Mont Pelerin Society

In October 2010, we hold our first general meeting in the South Pacific and second in the southern hemisphere. We return to the beautiful city of Sydney, which last hosted a regional meeting in 1985.

Since our last general meeting in Tokyo in 2008, the global intellectual and political climate seems to be shifting again towards taking that Road to Serfdom, which the Society was set up to avoid. Hence, there can be no more important task today than to test the foundations of those principles of liberty that the society has espoused and, till recently, seemed to be in the ascendant. As the ideas of the Enlightenment – particularly of its Scottish parent – have formed the bedrock of these beliefs, it is opportune that the general theme of this meeting is to discuss whether these ideas still have relevance and how they can be strengthened. As many political conflicts and differing policy prescriptions are ultimately based upon divergent implicit beliefs about human nature, it is important to see how our understanding of human nature has been refurbished by the recent advances in the human sciences, and the extent to which this will aid a twenty-first century liberal Enlightenment.

One of the stated aims of the Society at its founding was ‘the analysis and exploration of the nature of the present crisis so as to bring home to others, its essential moral and economic origins.’ At another time of crisis, when economic and personal liberties seem again to be threatened, it is appropriate that the organisers of the meeting have included a number of sessions to discuss these threats. As a glance at the program will show, the meeting will be discussing not only the promise that recent scientific advances hold for a New Enlightenment but also the current threats to old Enlightenment ideals as well as the means to counter them.
